"For BB-8 I was very inspired by vintage (1950's) dresses. The hip details were perfect for facilitating a nipped waist and full hem while directly referencing his character design. We loved the idea of having a belt, of having matching accessories in general, which was much more common in vintage dresses. The 3D buckle being his 'eye' is a cute throwback that also helps create the visual illusion of the dress being BB-8's body.
